zGentic
Documentation for everyone who uses it, and for the people who run it.
zGentic is a chat workspace for your organisation. You write a question the way you would write it to a colleague, and you get a written answer back.
It differs from a search box in two ways. It can work from your own material — documents you upload, files in a shared project, and the live web when your organisation allows it. And it can carry out work that takes several steps, such as reading three documents, comparing them and drafting a summary.
Everything you see belongs to your organisation. Answers are built only from material you are allowed to open, and colleagues see only what has been shared with them.

Two things worth knowing on day one¶
The answer is written in front of you, word by word. Before the first words appear, one line with three pulsing dots says what is being done — "Searching the web · 4s", "Looking in your documents" — and a timer keeps counting during long jobs, so you can tell the difference between working and stuck. Stop ends the answer whenever you want, and what was already written stays. An answer is saved when it finishes, so if zGentic is restarted mid-answer that answer is lost and you re-ask; see Chat basics.
You decide what each chat may use. The Tools sheet — the + button next to the message box — is where you switch abilities on and off: searching the web, using your own documents, spending more time on a hard question, calling in a helper, reaching another system. Your choices are remembered for that chat, so a research chat and a quick-question chat can behave differently.
A note on vocabulary¶
This site avoids technical words where a plain one will do. The few terms that are hard to avoid — mostly because they are printed on buttons in the product — are explained in one sentence each in Words explained.
